This paper deals with fundamental aspects of animal behaviour and summarises the use of welfare traits as selection criterion in breeding programs, the most accepted welfare indicators, and the genetics of welfare. It includes two sections concerning the welfare of poultry and pigs, and several results obtained in different Spanish breeds of chickens.
