The globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) cultivar "Imperial Star" produced sufficiently uniform plants from seed and clearly higher yields than several selected "Tudela" clones, vegetatively propagated either by stumps or in vitro, in Saragosse, Spain. "Imperial Star" also showed a higher spring yield than "Tudela" clones. The second season, when traditional "Tudela" clones are yielding very early in fall, "Imperial Star" shows a scarce fall yield. "Imperial Star" higher fall yield in the first growing season would be possible by proper sowing timing.
