- Abstract
Two experiments were established at the Pabellon experimental Station, Ags. Mex., located in the temperate region in México. The objective was to evaluate forage and grain responses of two different maize genotypes to plant density. The hybrid HV‑313 (erect leaf hybrid) and the variety Celaya (lax leaves) were evaluated at population densities of 40, 65, 90 and 115 thousand plants per hectare. These experiments were established independently by genotype, both under a randomized complete block design. Plant density had a linear effect on green and dry forage (P0.05), even as the number of ears per plant decreased (P<0.01). The variety Celaya had a reduction in number of ears per plant (P0.05). This research suggests that maize hybrids with erect leaves have a good potential to increase the amount and quality of forage production by increasing plant density.
