Summary:

After making a brief review of the history of the Breeders Association of the Select Retinto Cattle Breed as well as the seminars which have taken place on this breed, we go on to analyse the National Selection Plan for this breed in which we include the aims, the conditions that must be met by participating breeders, the compromises that are expected of them, the phases of the Plan and other benefits that will be gained from its application.
In another part of this paper, we deal with the organisation for information gathering, both genealogical as well as morphological and the control of the outcome. From the collected information, we show detailed data, presently available, concerning these three areas: genealogy, morphology and production.
The data have been analysed from a genetic point of view, following a method appropiate for the three phases of evaluation: at weaning on the farms, individually at testing centres and through descendency.
The paper sums up by referring to various research directions presently being followed in search of solutions for some of the manifest problems of this breed.
