Summary:

Profits are estimated for banana and avocado crops in the Canary Islands. Using an activity‑based costing approach, costs are simulated for conventional and organic cultivation in open‑air plots or greenhouses. Annual yields and the seasonal distribution of production and the corresponding revenues are assumed to depend on geographical orientation and altitude level. Conventional greenhouse banana cultivation is shown to be the most profitable option in lower altitude levels, whereas organic open‑air avocado production provides the highest profit margins above different altitude levels depending on the geographical orientation.
