Summary:
The aim of this study was to evaluate different castration methods in Cavia porcellus and their impact on animal welfare, reproduction and production. In the research, 100 whole males of C. porcellus were used distributed in 4 treatments that were lactic acid (LA), calcium chloride (CC), Innosure® (I) and control (Co). In each treatment, 3 doses were tested, which were 0.10 ml, 0.15 ml and 0.20 ml, except in the control where dose 0 ml was applied. In such a way, 10 groups of 10 animals each were constituted. In each group, 11 variables were evaluated, which were weight gain, mortality, testicular diameter, riding without a female, riding with a female, aggression, lethargy, seizures, iatrogenic lesions, pruritus or discomfort at the point of inoculation, and vocalizations. The Innosure treatment showed a significant weight gain compared to LA, CC and Co. In addition, all treatments reduced testicular diameter while in control it increased. In relation to the various variables, it was detected that in the groups where there was a higher frequency or incidence, they were as follows: aggressions in the Co and AL 0.20 ml groups, pruritus at the point of inoculation in AL 0.10 ml, lethargy in I 0.15 ml and 0.20 ml, iatrogenic lesions in CC 0.10 ml, seizures in I 0.20 ml, vocalizations in I 0.20 ml, mortality in I 0.20 ml, mounts with female in Co and I 0.20 ml, and mounts without female in Co and I 0.20 ml. In conclusion, all treatments induced castration, however, I requires further investigation.
