In this paper, a brief introduction to the decision theory and its applications to animal breeding are presented. Different criteria are described with especial reference to the utility theory. The application of these criteria in taking selection decisions and comparing breeding schemes is also reviewed, discussing the main contributions of decision theory to animal breeding.
