Summary:

The understanding of the physiology of reproduction is essential to improve the reproductive parameters and the economic benefits, especially in rabbits that are subjected to a high rhythm of production. This paper is focused to review the current advances in follicular dynamics in rabbit. To better understand the relationship between ovarian activity and sexual behaviour and lactation, both morphological and functional characteristics of ovarian follicles during folliculogenesis are described. Lactation in rabbit is a physiological status, which influences the reproductive success of this specie. Nevertheless, this reproductive achievement also depends on success of different and progressive physiologic process like ovulation, fertilization, implantation and embryo survival. Moreover, this review highlights the relevance of oocyte through follicular development; endocrine, paracrine and autocrine factors are involved in differentiation, proliferation and cellular steroidogenesis processes implied in ovarian follicular development and formation of a competent oocyte capable to ovulate, be fertilized and give rise to survival embryos and newborns.
