Analysis of some factors affecting weight at birth, homogeneity of litter and growth of piglets during lactation

Summary:

23 litters from 23 LW x (LWxLR) primiparous sows and 33 .litters from 11 LWxLR multiparous sows from 2nd to 4th farrowing were controled. The sows were mated by two different boars, Dutch Large White and Pietrain x Duroc crossbred boars. The pig lets were weighed at birth and on 21 st day of life. An analysis of covariance was achieved to show the results. At birth and for primiparous and multiparous sows, the males and the piglets from Pietrain x Duroc crossbred boar were heavier than the females and the piglets from Large White boar (P<0.05). The piglets, which were born in winter, were significantly lighter than those were born in summer (1460.7 g vs 1596.1 g for primiparous and 1310.3 g vs 1591.6 g for multi parous). At the second farrowing, the highest birth weight of piglets was obtained (P<0.05) and the birth weight was significantly descended by litter size (P<0.05) for both sows. The heterogeneity of litter was increased by litter size and parity order and the litters were more homogeneus in summer and those from Pietrain x Duroc crossbred boar. The individual growth of piglets was positively influenced by birth weight for primiparous and multiparous sows and negatively by the weaned litter size for primpiparous sows (P<0.0002), but not significantly for multiparous sows (P<0,748). The Pietrain x Duroc crossbred litters were heavier than those from Large White boar. For multiparous sows daily gain of the litter increased from 2nd to 4th lactation. Only for primiparous, the heterogeneity of the litter resulted a significant decrease of the daily gain (P<0.0001).
