Cost and effect of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus on the (re)productive performance of a farm in Mexico

Summary:

Analysis of 483 services and 403 farrowings were carried out in order to determine the (re)productive performance, as well as the cost per weaned piglet, of a naïve semi‑technified, full‑cycle farm in the highland area of the State of Mexico affected by a PED outbreak. A repeated-measurement design was used to ascertain the duration of the outbreak and a one‑way analysis of variance to compare (re)productive performance. The cost per weaned piglet was determined using a general cost formula, with the following four periods being established and studied: 1) a global period 52 weeks that included the outbreak; 2) a pre-outbreak period of 22 weeks; 3) the 8‑week period that the outbreak lasted, and 4) a post‑outbreak period of 22 weeks. Piglet mortalities reached 16.60 % for the global period that was studied, and 11.70 %, 52.20 % and 14.90 % respectively for the periods before, during and after the outbreak. Differences in the number of weaned piglets, lactation length and the number of first post-farrowing service days were observed. The average cost per weaned piglet was highest during the period of the outbreak (USD 29.02), with an average profit of USD 18.66, while the lowest cost (USD 23.02) was recorded during the 22 weeks before the said period, with an average profit of USD 24.66. Although performance on the farm returned to pre-disease levels, both the cost per weaned piglet and the pre-weaning mortality levels, remained higher than they had been before the outbreak for at least 22 weeks after it.
